The UN Special
\nRapporteur on violence against women and girls, Reem Alsalem, described the humanitarian situation in Sudan as \u201ccatastrophic and worse than imaginable.\u201d
\nShe revealed that sexual violence and systematic rape are being used as a \u201cweapon of war\u201d to destroy the fabric of Sudanese society.
\nAlsalem noted that systematic sexual violence is not limited to isolated individual cases, but rather constitutes a weapon of war aimed at destroying Sudanese society as a whole. \u201cThese violations do not impose their brutality on women alone\u2014who are the direct victims of rape\u2014but also subjugate their male relatives, whom the Rapid Support Forces force to witness these abuses, leaving them powerless to prevent harm to the women in their families and to protect their homes,\u201d she said.
\nThe UN official also pointed to the phenomenon of \u201ceconomic violence,\u201d which is no less dangerous than other harms caused by the war machine. This includes the looting of homes, theft of crops and gold, and the destruction of infrastructure.
