To the sound of people crowding around a vehicle distributing free meals, Laila Suleiman woke up in a shelter center in Abu Haraz, west of El Obeid\u2014the capital of North Kordofan State. She quickly left the camp, running after the volunteers\u2019 truck in hopes of getting a meal for the day to feed her children, after her family was displaced from Al-Dibaybat in South Kordofan.<\/h4>\n

Suleiman expressed her sorrow as she saw the containers of around 300 people returned empty to their owners. They represent 25 families who had recently arrived with new waves of displacement from Abu Zabad, Al-Fula, and villages in Al-Qoz locality.<\/h4>\n

Hamed Al-Balloula, supervisor of communal kitchens and free food services in Abu Haraz, complained about the difficulty of securing food supplies to prepare meals due to continuously rising prices and declining donations. This situation threatens the closure of several kitchens, especially with the daily influx of displaced people from West and South Kordofan.<\/h4>\n

According to Al-Balloula, the situation of displaced people in the area is deteriorating drastically, particularly after the suspension of support and humanitarian assistance from the North Kordofan State government and both local and international organizations for more than 60 days. Residents of the shelters have been sharing the little they have.<\/h4>\n

He added that \u201cfood is running out, and dozens are going a day or more without eating, exposing them to acute malnutrition and threatening their lives due to the lack of healthcare and medicine.\u201d<\/h4>\n

Deteriorating conditions<\/h4>\n

Fatima Kabashi, who was displaced from the city of Al-Nuhud and is now living in a shelter in White Nile State, said that \u201cliving conditions in displacement camps are extremely poor, in addition to the suspension of government support and local organization assistance for 60 days.\u201d<\/h4>\n

She explained that most of what reaches the camps comes from community efforts or charitable individuals and is insufficient to meet daily needs, especially with overcrowding from displaced people arriving from West and South Kordofan.<\/h4>\n

She added that \u201cdozens of women are suffering severely, with recorded deaths among women due to malnutrition, poisoning, and dengue fever, along with childbirth complications and repeated miscarriages.\u201d<\/h4>\n

She emphasized that \u201cthe situation of pregnant women in displacement camps is extremely poor due to the lack of adequate nutrition for both mother and fetus. Pregnant women require high nutritional intake, and ensuring balanced and sufficient meals is essential.\u201d<\/h4>\n

For his part, Abdelmajed Al-Sadiq, a member of the North Kordofan Emergency Room, stated that \u201cthe situation of newly displaced people in El Obeid is worsening rapidly, many communal kitchens have stopped operating, and residents are sharing their limited resources.\u201d<\/h4>\n

He noted that 12 charitable kitchens have shut down due to lack of funding, adding that these kitchens were a lifeline for thousands of families now facing real famine, while epidemics and malnutrition affect hundreds.<\/h4>\n

He called on national and international organizations to urgently intervene to prevent further deterioration.<\/h4>\n

He also pointed out that conditions in shelters south of El Obeid are relatively better, as food and shelter supplies are available for about 45 days, along with mobile clinics, medical staff, and medicines. However, the continuous influx of people fleeing armed conflict exceeds volunteers\u2019 capacity and worsens the humanitarian crisis.<\/h4>\n

Catastrophic consequences<\/h4>\n

Amid these conditions, the UN Women revealed in a report that most displaced families in the three Kordofan states have not received humanitarian assistance over the past three months.<\/h4>\n

The report indicated that 91% of households in North Kordofan, 72% in South Kordofan, and 87% in West Kordofan had not received aid. Even those who did reported that it was insufficient to meet their needs.<\/h4>\n

The report was based on a qualitative survey of 43 women-led organizations, along with a discussion session involving women leaders and service providers currently delivering humanitarian aid across Kordofan.<\/h4>\n

UN Women warned of catastrophic consequences of food insecurity on women. It found that a member of 51% of displaced households in South Kordofan and 35% in West Kordofan had gone a day or more without food during the four weeks prior to the survey.<\/h4>\n

The report also documented miscarriages among women displaced from conflict areas and deaths among newborns due to lack of food during displacement.<\/h4>\n

It highlighted barriers to accessing healthcare, including high treatment costs and lack of medicines and essential services.<\/h4>\n

The report also recorded that some health facilities in West Kordofan resorted to using veterinary medicines to treat humans due to severe shortages, and that some women arrived deceased at health centers due to long distances.<\/h4>\n

Food shortages<\/h4>\n

Al-Rashid Jabr Al-Dar, a displaced person who fled from Al-Dilling in South Kordofan to El Obeid, said that \u201cliving conditions in camps have worsened due to lack of food, clean water, healthcare, and humanitarian assistance, as well as the suspension of charitable initiatives.\u201d<\/h4>\n

He added that \u201cthere are many challenges facing displaced people, including power and water outages, lack of healthcare, and severe shortages of medicines.\u201d<\/h4>\n

He continued: \u201cThousands are suffering under harsh conditions, with food scarcity, rising prices, and lack of money, forcing some to resort to begging\u2014especially women, children, and the elderly.\u201d<\/h4>\n

Similarly, Rabab Suleiman, a humanitarian volunteer with Kordofan emergency rooms, said that \u201cthose fleeing armed violence are living in extreme poverty, compounded by unpaid salaries in both public and private sectors, and rising unemployment among youth.\u201d<\/h4>\n

She noted that the most urgent needs in shelters are food supplies and medical assistance, as many families have exhausted their savings and cannot provide meals or buy medicine.<\/h4>\n

She warned that reliance on personal efforts to sustain livelihoods and healthcare will soon collapse as funds run out, stressing the need for urgent humanitarian intervention.<\/h4>\n

In a related development, the Dar Hamar Emergency Room stated that northern localities of West Kordofan\u2014where many displaced people are located\u2014have entered a phase of real humanitarian catastrophe, with a complete collapse of basic living conditions and rising security violations.<\/h4>\n

The statement added that these areas are experiencing a total lack of food supplies and depletion of strategic reserves, leading to outbreaks of measles among children, severe malnutrition, deaths from hunger, and a complete absence of medicines.<\/h4>\n

It also noted that hospitals and health centers have ceased operations, and main water stations have stopped functioning, forcing residents to rely on contaminated water sources, raising the risk of an environmental disaster.<\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
