Two United Nations agencies said on Thursday that more than one million Sudanese refugees are facing severe reductions in essential assistance such as food and water unless donors fill a funding gap exceeding $400 million.<\/h4>\n

More than 1.3 million Sudanese refugees are living in neighboring Chad, most of whom arrived after the outbreak of war in Sudan between the army and the Rapid Support Forces in April 2023. Many of them are survivors of mass killings and famine in Darfur.<\/h4>\n

The World Food Programme (WFP) and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said in a joint statement that the available funding is insufficient to support all refugees. The two agencies warned that further cuts in aid are expected in the coming months unless a shortfall of $428 million is covered.<\/h4>\n

Sarah Gordon-Gibson, WFP Country Director in Chad, said: \u201cWith less than half of the resources we need, we cannot deliver enough food to those who need it most. This will force them to adopt harsh coping strategies and put their lives at risk.\u201d<\/h4>\n

The joint statement did not specify which donors had reduced their funding.<\/h4>\n

UNHCR had previously indicated that cuts in U.S. foreign aid are among the main reasons for the funding shortfall. However, Sudan and Chad remain among 17 countries expected to receive $2 billion in U.S. aid in 2026.<\/h4>\n

Other Western donors have also reduced foreign aid while redirecting funds toward defense spending.<\/h4>\n

UNHCR has already announced that it can only assist four out of every ten refugees in Chad, leaving many without shelter. Meanwhile, classroom overcrowding has worsened, with more than 100 students per teacher in most schools.<\/h4>\n

The agency added that refugees in the Ennedi East region in northeastern Chad are surviving on less than half the minimum daily water requirement.<\/h4>\n

The Norwegian Refugee Council also reported severe levels of hunger in Chad, citing a survey showing that 70% of refugee families reduced the number of their daily meals over the past month.<\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
