The World Food Programme has described the situation in Sudan as the largest humanitarian hunger crisis in the world.<\/h4>\n

The agency reported that more than 19 million people\u2014out of a population of 45 million\u2014are facing acute food insecurity, amid the ongoing conflict and its economic and humanitarian consequences.<\/h4>\n

At the same time, the program announced the reopening of its country office in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, after it had been operating from Port Sudan since the outbreak of the war. This move is seen as a step toward a broader return of United Nations agencies to the capital.<\/h4>\n

Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau warned\u2014following his meeting with the program\u2019s new country director Abdullah Al-Wardat and Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris\u2014that the continued fighting across large parts of the country will lead to further suffering and deepen acute food insecurity affecting millions.<\/h4>\n

He stressed that without an end to the conflict, the humanitarian situation is likely to deteriorate even further.<\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
