A report published today (Monday) by a group of non-governmental organizations revealed that millions in Sudan are living on just one meal a day, as the country\u2019s food crisis worsens and fears grow of its further spread.<\/h4>\n

The ongoing war in Sudan between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, which enters its fourth year next Wednesday, has led to widespread hunger and the displacement of millions, creating one of the world\u2019s largest humanitarian crises.<\/h4>\n

Worst-affected regions<\/h4>\n

The report, issued by Action Against Hunger, CARE International, the International Rescue Committee, Mercy Corps, and the Norwegian Refugee Council, stated that \u201cin the two regions hardest hit by the conflict\u2014North Darfur and South Kordofan\u2014millions of families are surviving on only one meal a day.\u201d<\/h4>\n

It added that \u201cmany often go entire days without any food,\u201d noting that some have resorted to eating leaves and animal fodder to stay alive.<\/h4>\n

Government denies famine<\/h4>\n

The Sudanese government aligned with the army denies the existence of famine in the country, while the Rapid Support Forces deny responsibility for conditions in areas under their control.<\/h4>\n

According to the 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan, about 61.7% of Sudan\u2019s population\u2014around 28.9 million people\u2014are experiencing acute food insecurity.<\/h4>\n

The United Nations has reported widespread atrocities and waves of ethnically driven violence. Last November, a global hunger monitoring body confirmed famine for the first time in the city of El Fasher, as well as in Kadugli.<\/h4>\n

Famine thresholds exceeded<\/h4>\n

In February, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a UN-supported global hunger monitoring system, concluded that acute malnutrition levels had exceeded famine thresholds in the Um Baro area and in Karnoi.<\/h4>\n

The report, based on interviews with farmers, traders, and humanitarian workers inside Sudan, details how the ongoing war is pushing people toward famine due to the collapse of agriculture and the use of starvation as a weapon of war, including the deliberate destruction of farms and markets.<\/h4>\n

It also noted that community kitchens are increasingly unable to meet growing needs, while major cuts in donor funding are limiting the ability of aid agencies to respond.<\/h4>\n

The report highlighted that women and girls are disproportionately affected, facing high risks of sexual violence and harassment when going to fields, markets, or collecting water.
