Sudanese women have paid a heavy price in the war raging between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since fighting first erupted in the capital, Khartoum, in April 2023. The conflict has since spread to Darfur, Al Jazira, Kordofan, Blue Nile and other areas, affecting more than 70 percent of the country’s territory.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

Most women have suffered severe harm, including the looting of property and physical and sexual abuse, amid an almost complete absence of justice and accountability for perpetrators. Some have also lost their children and husbands, while many have endured repeated displacement as the war has expanded.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

Despite these harsh circumstances, many Sudanese women have managed to resist the consequences of the war and overcome their difficult conditions by creating a different reality for themselves through trade and other income-generating activities that help them meet their daily needs, particularly after many lost their primary jobs. Many of them are university graduates.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

Difficult Circumstances<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

Early in the morning, Souad heads toward a market located a few kilometres from where she lives. In a small corner beside a grocery shop, which she has turned into a tea stall, she lights a fire, marking the beginning of a long and exhausting day under the scorching heat of both the sun and the fire in front of her.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

She told Mashaweer: \u201cI fled with my children from Khartoum to Al Jazira State three months after the war broke out. My husband lost his job, and his health subsequently deteriorated. We had no other option but for me to work.\u201d<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

She added: \u201cI am the mother of eight daughters, two of whom work with me selling tea. Whatever I earn goes toward food and drink because we are living with relatives, so we have to take responsibility for ourselves. My husband also needs medical treatment, especially because he is elderly. Despite the hardship and exhaustion, I am happy that I have not had to ask anyone for help.\u201d<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

Struggle and Determination<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

For her part, homemaker Wisal Hassan told Mashaweer that she was displaced from Kordofan to the city of Atbara. Before the war, she worked as an employee at the Ministry of Finance and is the mother of three children. After losing her job because of the armed conflict, she was forced to sell clothes and household utensils in local markets to provide for her family.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

She said she was completely satisfied with what life had allotted her and was determined to raise her children and ensure that they had access to education.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

A Major Transformation<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

Samia Adel, a mother of four, was also forced to work in the market. She sits behind a small table filled with handmade accessories made from beads. Before the war, she worked as a university lecturer in Khartoum.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

She told Mashaweer that \u201cthe armed conflict in Sudan has turned life upside down, forcing me to flee to Egypt with my children and my mother. It was a journey toward an unknown fate amid economic conditions that everyone knows. I found no source of income other than returning to my old hobby and using it to meet the costs of rent and daily living.\u201d<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

She continued: \u201cI have been passionate about making handicrafts since I was young, but I stopped practicing this hobby for many years. Severe financial need, especially since I had no income to cover my housing and living expenses, forced me to make beadwork accessories. I bring the beads from the city of Port Said and display the finished products at bazaars.\u201d<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

The university lecturer stressed that \u201cwork of any kind is not shameful as long as it provides enough income to preserve one’s dignity and avoid having to ask others for help.\u201d<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

Willpower and Courage<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

Social specialist Tahani Abadi said that \u201cthe war has inflicted enormous losses on women in all aspects of life. It has caused many of them to lose their jobs, particularly since most of them support extended families. This has forced them to look beyond the battles. We see women everywhere working to continue their lives, create a different reality, and search and plan for sources of income.\u201d<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

She noted that some women have turned to working in homes, bakeries, shops and other occupations, while others have drawn on their hidden talents to start small businesses and ease the financial hardship affecting most Sudanese families.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

She added to Mashaweer: \u201cI was truly amazed by the determination of these strong women who have overcome the tragedies of war, especially women-led households. However, the problem is that the continuation of the war means more violations against women, while protection mechanisms remain largely absent.\u201d<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

She explained that \u201cthe working environment, both inside and outside Sudan, has become extremely difficult and is facing major challenges, including rising prices of materials used to produce goods, as well as security threats affecting the states.
