A joint meeting between Sudanese anti-war civil forces and the \u201cQuintet Mechanism\u201d began at the African Union headquarters in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, at noon today (Monday). The meeting aims to explore ways to end the war and design a Sudanese-led and Sudanese-owned peace process that would lead to a just and comprehensive peace and a sustainable democratic civilian transition.<\/h4>\n

The delegation includes representatives of the Sudanese Declaration of Principles Forces, the Popular Congress Party, civil society organisations, women\u2019s and youth networks, as well as prominent public figures. They share an anti-war position and maintain independence from both warring parties.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

Representing the Quintet, which comprises the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the League of Arab States, the European Union, and the United Nations, are Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, Head of the Mechanism; Pekka Haavisto, the UN Secretary-General\u2019s Personal Envoy for Sudan; Annette Weber, the European Union Special Representative for the Horn of Africa; Lawrence Korbandy, IGAD\u2019s Special Envoy for Sudan; and Ambassador Zaid Al-Saban, Director of the Sudan and Horn of Africa Department at the League of Arab States.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

The civil forces are presenting a vision for an integrated peace process that begins with an immediate and unconditional humanitarian truce to protect civilians and ensure the delivery of humanitarian assistance, paving the way for a permanent ceasefire and a political process that addresses the root causes of the crisis and lays the foundations for a democratic civilian transition.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

The vision stresses the need for civil forces to participate in designing and leading the peace process, based on fair criteria that prevent any party from dominating it. It calls for the exclusion of the National Congress Party, its Islamic Movement, and their affiliated fronts; the unification of international and regional mediation efforts; and coordinated pressure measures, including expanding the arms embargo to cover all of Sudan, cutting off the sources of war financing, and holding accountable those responsible for atrocities and those obstructing peace.<\/h4>\n

The vision also rejects granting legitimacy to any authority established by either of the warring parties, in a manner that preserves Sudan\u2019s unity and prevents the humanitarian truce from becoming a gateway to the country\u2019s partition.<\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
