Sudanese women and girls face additional dangers while fleeing from the Darfur region to Chad, particularly following an escalation in attacks targeting civilians in Kernoi locality in North Darfur State. Their plight is further compounded by insecurity, reciprocal airstrikes involving the Sudanese army and its allies and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and a deteriorating humanitarian situation that has exceeded the capacity of local authorities to respond to growing needs.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

Dozens of women and girls have been subjected to grave violations, including rape and kidnapping, along the routes from Kernoi and Tina to Chad. Armed groups and criminal gangs have exploited the security vacuum to commit horrific crimes and violations against civilians, including abductions and sexual assaults.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

\u00a0Violations and Humanitarian Needs<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

Meanwhile, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has revealed that women and girls have been kidnapped and raped during their recent journeys from Sudan to Chad, amid a twentyfold acceleration in the rate of people fleeing the country.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

Mamado Dian Balde, the UN Regional Refugee Coordinator for Sudan, said: \u201cNewly arrived refugees continue to describe the devastating human cost of the conflict in Sudan, with women and girls reporting grave violations, including kidnapping and rape, during their journeys to Chad in search of safety.\u201d<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

He noted a sharp increase in the arrival of Sudanese refugees in Chad. More than 400 people per day crossed the border through Adr\u00e9 and Tina over the course of one week, equivalent to 20 times the average daily rate recorded over the preceding few months.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

Balde explained that \u201cthe transit centre in Tina, eastern Chad, is currently hosting more than 4,300 people, with urgent needs for shelter, water, sanitation and protection services.\u201d<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

He also reported that more than 190,000 refugees were living in difficult conditions in border areas while awaiting relocation to planned settlements farther inside the country. Meanwhile, approximately 31,000 families were living without adequate shelter, and most refugees were receiving less than half the minimum amount of water required per person per day.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

He called for renewed international support for people affected by the conflict inside Sudan and for neighbouring countries, including Chad, which continues to keep its borders open and host millions of refugees.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

\u00a0Severe Trauma<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

In a related account, Khalida Juma, who fled Kernoi locality near the Chadian border following an escalation in attacks, recounted her experience.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

\u201cI was raped by masked soldiers. They took me and several other women to a remote area, and after a struggle, they succeeded in raping us until we lost consciousness,\u201d she said.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

Speaking to Mashawir, she added: \u201cFive hours later, we found ourselves on the road between Tina and Chad. Volunteers transported us to the camps, and at the hospital I underwent medical examinations and received treatment. However, I have been suffering from severe trauma and psychological distress ever since that day.\u201d<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

Juma explained that the documented cases of sexual assault were inaccurate and that the actual number could be much higher, particularly because many women and girls who have been raped choose to remain silent and refrain from reporting the crimes for fear of social stigma and disgrace.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

\u00a0Kidnapping Incidents<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

For her part, Maryam, a Sudanese refugee who requested the use of a pseudonym, told Mashawir that \u201cthe journey from Darfur to Chad has become fraught with danger, particularly following a significant increase in grave violations against civilians, with kidnapping and rape incidents rising sharply in recent weeks.\u201d<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

She added: \u201cThe worsening humanitarian and security conditions forced us to flee the Abu Qumra area on foot. We were compelled to spend the night in the open halfway along the route before continuing our displacement journey the following day.\u201d<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

Maryam continued: \u201cWhile we were sleeping, we were suddenly surrounded from all directions by an armed group. An hour later, a small vehicle carrying soldiers arrived, and they forced some of the women into the vehicle. One of them threatened to kill us if we raised our voices or sought help from passers-by.\u201d<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

She added that the perpetrators contacted their families and demanded a sum of money for each woman in exchange for her release.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

\u00a0Assault and Torture<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

Meanwhile, a kidnapping and assault incident involving a Sudanese refugee was reported at Touloum refugee camp in northeastern Chad. The woman was found five days after her disappearance, bound and blindfolded, with visible signs of severe violence.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

According to refugees in the camp, the victim disappeared last Thursday while on her way to the hospital for medical examinations. Unknown individuals intercepted her along the way. Her family searched for her throughout the camp, using social media and loudspeakers to appeal for information, but their efforts initially yielded no results.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

Fatima Fadl, the camp spokesperson, disclosed that a woman had been abducted, detained and subsequently returned to the camp after being sexually assaulted.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

She noted that \u201cthe preliminary examination confirmed that she had been assaulted by several individuals, in addition to showing signs of burns on her back.\u201d<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

Fadl also warned that girls face the risk of sexual violence when travelling long distances outside the camps to collect firewood, particularly in the absence of legal support and amid the impunity enjoyed by perpetrators.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

\u00a0Challenges and Complications<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

In a related development, human rights activist Nadia Al-Sheikh explained that armed groups operating in the border areas between Darfur and Chad had committed widespread violations against women and girls in recent months.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

\u201cDozens of women have been raped, in addition to cases of kidnapping. We have also confirmed the documentation of sexual assaults committed against women while they were fleeing,\u201d she said.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

Speaking to Mashawir, Al-Sheikh noted that \u201cthese brutal acts undermine the security and stability of communities and leave deep psychological scars on women and girls who continue to live under constant threat. There are also concerns about the potential spread of sexually transmitted infections and the failure to provide timely care related to pregnancy and safe abortion.\u201d<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

The human rights activist expressed concern that these violations were occurring in full view of the international and regional communities, as well as Sudanese civil society and human rights advocates, yet little attention was being paid to the increasing number of rape and kidnapping cases along the escape routes from Darfur to Chad. She said armed groups were responsible for these violations, while women continued to bear the consequences.<\/h4>\n

She continued: \u201cIn reality, we face enormous difficulties in reaching women and girls who have survived these abuses, as they are constantly on the move while fleeing and seeking refuge.
