Former Sovereignty Council member and prominent Sumoud Alliance leader Mohamed Al-Faki Suleiman said that Sudan is facing famine, warning against attempts to downplay the situation while people are increasingly unable to afford even basic foodstuffs such as bread and sorghum. He noted that the price of a ardab of sorghum had reached \u201cone and a half billion\u201d Sudanese pounds, while several states had issued local orders prohibiting sorghum from being transported outside their borders.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

Al-Faki pointed out that rainfall during this year’s rainy season had been insufficient to provide reassurance. As the rainy season draws to a close and the Dert season (the post-rainy-season agricultural period) and harvest begin, agricultural lands are being converted into grazing areas and livestock fodder. However, these resources are not available at the levels seen in previous years.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

He warned that this situation directly threatens the lives of both people and livestock and could lead to dangerous conflicts between farmers and pastoralists over agricultural crops.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

Al-Faki called for an appeal to the international community to recognise that Sudan is facing famine. He explained that although several countries in the region are experiencing famine, they have functioning governments, whereas Sudan is facing famine without an effective government, in addition to the ongoing war.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

He urged the parties to sit down and engage in a humanitarian truce to save the lives of Sudanese people. He also recalled that the delayed declaration of famine towards the end of former President Jaafar Nimeiri’s dictatorship cost hundreds of thousands of Sudanese their lives.<\/h4>\n

Warning against allowing the country to reach that stage and repeating the same experience, Al-Faki called on Sudanese people to raise their voices and refuse to die in vain, urging them to speak out about hunger and thirst rather than focusing on politics.<\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
