Person Killed in Armed Robbery Targeting Foreign Aid Team in Darfur

Mashawir – Reports

A team from the Irish international humanitarian organization Concern came under armed attack while passing through the Ramaliya area, west of Kereinik locality in West Darfur, approximately 60 kilometers east of El Geneina, the state capital.
According to local sources, the organization’s team was subjected to gunfire and armed robbery by unidentified gunmen during a field mission to displacement areas. The attack resulted in the killing of one staff member and the looting of personal belongings of the team.
This incident comes less than two weeks after several staff members of the French organization Handicap International were abducted by unidentified gunmen in Central Darfur. They were later released following efforts and mediation by local communities.
Observers have warned that the continued targeting of humanitarian workers will further hinder the already limited aid operations, worsening the deteriorating humanitarian situation that the Darfur region has been experiencing since the onset of the current conflict.
