The Sudanese Doctors’ Union Preparatory Committee reported 293 cases of meningitis, including 31 deaths, across four states in recent weeks.
Adiba Ibrahim Al-Sayed, a member of the Preparatory Committee, stated that of the total cases, 184 infections were recorded in eastern Sudan, including 12 deaths.
Meanwhile, the Northern State reported 56 cases with nine deaths, Omdurman in Khartoum State recorded 14 cases with five deaths, and Gezira State documented 39 cases with five deaths.
Al-Sayed attributed the outbreak to extreme heat, which has heightened bacterial activity, in addition to environmental contamination. She also pointed out that hospitals are facing serious challenges in handling the disease, including poor sanitary conditions and a lack of life-saving medications.
