United Nations: Women Most Affected by Food Insecurity and Escalating Violence in Sudan

Follow-ups – Mashawir

UN Women in Sudan has stated that women and girls are the most affected by rising food insecurity and escalating violence in the country.

Statistics indicate that nearly 26% of households are currently experiencing severe food insecurity, compared to only 14% a year ago.

This deterioration is largely attributed to the exclusion of women from aid distribution mechanisms, which has left their needs — and those of their families — overlooked and marginalized.

The crisis has been further worsened by the increased prevalence of gender-based violence, including rape, which continues to obstruct women’s access to humanitarian assistance.

An official report revealed that 1,138 cases of rape have been documented since April 2023, mostly in conflict-affected areas. However, the actual number is likely to be significantly higher due to the fear of stigma associated with reporting such crimes.
