Closure of Addiction Treatment Center in Sudan After Patient Death and Limb Amputation

Port Sudan - Mashaweer

The Ministry of Health in the Red Sea State, eastern Sudan, closed an addiction treatment center in the city of Port Sudan today (Wednesday), following a complaint regarding a medical error and a fatality.

The Ministry indicated that its legal department recommended filing a lawsuit against the center for violating Article 14 of the Red Sea State Health Law.

It stated that the decision to close the center was based on the recommendation of a committee formed after the complaint to investigate the center’s establishment and its acquisition of approvals from relevant authorities.

The statement explained that “the investigation committee found that the addiction treatment center had not obtained a license to operate, and the buildings did not meet the specifications required for private health centers.”

It added that “the center does not maintain patient files according to standard procedures, and the staff members have not obtained the required medical professional certifications. Furthermore, there was no psychologist to monitor patients, nor were there doctors who met the Sudan Medical Council’s requirements for professional practice.”
