UN: 8.1 Million Women in Sudan Need Health Services

Khartoum - Mashaweer

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced today (Wednesday) that 8.1 million women and girls of reproductive age in Sudan require urgent reproductive health services. With an estimated 1.1 million births expected this year, these needs come amid a widespread collapse of the national health system.

The organization indicated that it requires $97.7 million during the current year to assist 20.4 million people, including 4.9 million internal refugees. Notably, 80% of those targeted reside in areas where multiple vulnerability factors overlap, making them a top priority for the humanitarian response.

The WHO explained that it aims to provide direct health services to 6.6 million people out of the 20.1 million it plans to assist. These services include reproductive, maternal, and child health, mental health services and psychosocial support.

The organization warned that food insecurity is an additional factor exacerbating the health crisis. It is projected that 19.1 million people will face high levels of food insecurity during the first half of 2026.

The WHO reported that it has reprioritized its efforts to reach the most affected groups this year, despite a significant reduction in funding last year, which slashed its response capacity by more than 65%.
