Funding shortages force World Food Programme to reduce rations in Sudan

Khartoum - Mashaweer

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) revealed today (Monday) that it provided aid to 3.3 million Sudanese people last February, a 14 percent decrease compared to the same month last year, due to a lack of funding.

It noted that funding shortages have forced it to reprioritize, reducing the number of aid recipients from 11.5 million people in 2025 to 8.5 million in 2026, while focusing on the most needy groups.

The program revealed that it needs funding of up to $604 million for the period from March to August 2026, out of total requirements of $1.45 billion for the current year, while contributions received so far have not exceeded $5.2 million.

The program indicated that the deteriorating security situation is hindering its operations, as contracted trucks, warehouses, residences, and field teams have been subjected to airstrikes, resulting in the loss of food supplies, damage to infrastructure, and injuries, which has caused delays in supplies and increased risks to workers.
