Drought Conditions Affect Nearly Half of Sudan’s Agricultural Land

Omdurman – Mashawir

A report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has revealed that drought conditions are affecting nearly half of Sudan’s agricultural land, warning of the consequences for agricultural production and the worsening hunger crisis affecting millions of Sudanese.

The IPC has presented new evidence pointing to a deterioration in humanitarian conditions across large parts of the Darfur and Kordofan regions.

Nutritional data collected since January 2026 has revealed critical levels of acute malnutrition across extensive areas of Darfur. Meanwhile, the continuation of conflict, mass displacement, insufficient rainfall and limited livelihood opportunities are worsening food insecurity and reducing prospects for agricultural recovery in Kordofan.

According to the report, indicators show weak vegetation growth across approximately 64 per cent of agricultural land in North Darfur, and around 50 per cent of agricultural land in southern Darfur, West Kordofan and South Kordofan. The report also highlights severe water shortages affecting all or most agricultural land in these areas.

According to a statement by the Global Hunger Monitoring Initiative, nutritional data collected since January 2026 has revealed critical levels of acute malnutrition across large parts of Greater Darfur.

The initiative said that evidence pointed to a sharp increase in admissions to treatment centres for severe acute malnutrition in South Darfur and North Darfur, including areas previously classified as being at risk of famine.

The initiative warned that failure to urgently and substantially scale up humanitarian assistance could lead to worsening food insecurity, increased acute malnutrition and rising mortality rates.
