UN: Pressure Must Be Applied on Sudan’s Warring Parties to End the War

Washington – Mashawir

United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo said the situation in Sudan remains bleak, with continued fighting, drone strikes and a worsening humanitarian crisis.

In a briefing to the UN Security Council, she explained that the parties had yet to demonstrate a credible commitment to making concessions or negotiating a truce, instead betting on achieving military gains with external support.

She noted that drone attacks remained the leading cause of civilian casualties this year, calling for their use to be halted or strictly regulated.

DiCarlo stressed that “the United Nations is coordinating with the Quad to secure a humanitarian truce,” while its envoy, Pekka Haavisto, continues efforts to build confidence between the parties. These efforts include the release of detainees and the harmonisation of student examinations.

DiCarlo urged the Security Council to use all available tools to pressure the warring parties and their supporters to end the war, emphasising that accountability is not optional.
