UNESCO Adopts Resolution to Support Sudan in Education, Culture, Media, and the Recovery of Stolen Artifacts

Paris – Mashawir

The Executive Board of UNESCO, during its 221st session held last Wednesday, adopted a draft resolution submitted by the Republic of Sudan, calling for comprehensive support to Sudan in the fields of culture, education, media, and communications, as well as the recovery of stolen and looted artifacts.

The resolution, which was adopted unanimously without amendments (with 54 countries in favor), emphasizes the importance of supporting Sudan under the exceptional circumstances it is currently facing. It also places responsibility on the organization to develop a well-structured short- and long-term action plan to address Sudan’s priorities in sectors under UNESCO’s mandate.

The resolution includes the establishment of a special fund dedicated to supporting Sudan. This fund will provide technical and financial resources for educational, cultural, and artistic projects related to UNESCO, with particular attention given to protecting and rehabilitating Sudanese educational and cultural institutions.

Furthermore, the resolution highlighted the continuation of cooperation between UNESCO and the Permanent Delegation of Sudan to the organization, in coordination with INTERPOL, to recover looted Sudanese artifacts, strengthen protection mechanisms, and provide the necessary technical support to the antiquities sector and its professionals.

The resolution received widespread support from Arab, African, European, and Asian countries, along with several friendly nations. This strong backing is a clear expression of international solidarity with Sudan and a commitment by the global community to preserve its cultural heritage and ensure its people’s right to education and knowledge.
