Lack of Healthcare Deepens Suffering of Displaced People in Darfur

Follow-up – Mashaweer

Mohamed Khamis Doda, spokesperson for the Zamzam camp for displaced persons, stated that the situation in Al-Fashir and surrounding areas continues to deteriorate after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) rejected a one-week humanitarian truce proposed by the United Nations to allow the delivery of aid to displaced people in the region.

He noted that “the humanitarian conditions are extremely dire, with basic goods being very expensive and some in short supply, in addition to a cash liquidity crisis in the city.”

Doda described the health situation as catastrophic, with health and service centers shut down and a lack of life-saving medicines, all amid ongoing artillery and drone strikes by RSF forces.

He added that dozens of civilians are being killed or wounded daily, making it difficult to document the casualties due to the absence of any responsible agencies conducting official counts.

Doda urged the international community and humanitarian organizations to intervene urgently and seriously to save the lives of thousands of people in Al-Fashir and surrounding areas.

The RSF has imposed a suffocating siege on Al-Fashir since May 2024, under increasingly complex humanitarian conditions due to shortages of food and medicine. The RSF, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo “Hemedti,” seeks to take control of Al-Fashir to strengthen its hold over the Darfur region, where it already controls four out of five states.
