The Commission Begins Relocation of Sudanese Affected by Kiryandongo Camp Incident

Reports – Mashawir

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), in coordination with the Ugandan government, has begun implementing an emergency plan to relocate Sudanese families affected by recent violence at the Kiryandongo refugee camp in northern Uganda, which hosts thousands of refugees from various nationalities.

A group of youth from the Nuer ethnic community of South Sudan launched a series of attacks on the camp, resulting in the death of one Sudanese refugee and the injury of more than 30 others, amid escalating tensions within the camp.

A statement by the Sudanese Refugees Leadership Committee said the relocation process followed extensive consultations and an agreement with UNHCR to move the affected families to temporary shelter in the “Cluster G” area, considered one of the safest zones within the camp.

The statement noted that the attacks targeted several Sudanese refugee tents in different clusters, causing both human and material losses. It also called for enhanced security protection and preventive measures to avoid the recurrence of such incidents.

UNHCR reaffirmed its commitment to providing the necessary support to the affected families, including shelter and essential aid, until conditions stabilize and a safe environment is ensured for all camp residents.
