Documentation of Suicides of 135 Women Rape Survivors in Sudan

Monitoring – Mashawir

The Preliminary Committee of the Sudanese Doctors Syndicate has documented the suicides of 135 women who were raped following the outbreak of war between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in mid-April 2023.

Warring parties—particularly the Rapid Support Forces—have faced widespread accusations of committing severe violations against women, including rape, sexual violence, murder, arbitrary detention, sexual slavery, and abduction.

Dr. Adeeba Ibrahim Al-Sayed, an internal medicine and epidemiology specialist with the Omdurman branch of the committee, stated that “the committee has recorded the suicides of 135 women who had been raped.”

She pointed to multiple factors behind the suicides, such as the fear of social stigma, lack of sympathy toward the victims, and abandonment by families.

Al-Sayed revealed that the number of documented rape cases reported to the committee has risen to 679, all allegedly committed by members of the Rapid Support Forces, according to victim testimonies. Additionally, 256 cases of child rape have been recorded, with the victims ranging in age from 5 to 16 years, from the start of the war until July of this year.

She also reported that 48 abortions have been performed, including 12 cases at Al-Nau Hospital in Omdurman, Khartoum State, and 36 cases at Shendi Hospital in River Nile State.
