The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of worsening malnutrition, population displacement, and the spread of diseases, announcing that around 100,000 cases of cholera have been recorded in Sudan since July 2024.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom said that the ongoing violence in Sudan has caused famine, disease, and widespread suffering.
Speaking at a press conference in Geneva, he noted that vaccination campaigns against cholera had been carried out in several states, including Khartoum. He renewed warnings that the expected floods and heavy rains in large parts of the country could fuel new outbreaks of cholera, malaria, dengue fever, and other diseases, further aggravating malnutrition.
Regarding the difficulty of accessing food, Tedros cited reports from El Fasher, the besieged capital of North Darfur State, indicating that people are eating animal fodder to survive.
Millions of people across Sudan are suffering from hunger, and the World Health Organization has warned that around 770,000 children under the age of five could suffer from acute malnutrition this year.
