158 Deaths Reported from Cholera Outbreak in South Darfur

Mashawir – Reports

The Ministry of Health in South Darfur, western Sudan, announced that at least 158 people have died from cholera in the state, which is under the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Since the first cholera case was reported in South Darfur at the end of May, cases have been recorded in all five states of the Darfur region, with more than half of these cases concentrated in South Darfur, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

In a statement, the state’s Ministry of Health reported that cholera cases have risen to 2,880, with 158 deaths since the first case appeared on May 27, 2025.

For its part, the international medical organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) said the outbreak in Darfur is the worst in Sudan in years, warning of the risk of it spreading to neighboring South Sudan and Chad.

MSF explained that the mass displacement of civilians caused by the ongoing war has worsened the cholera outbreak in Darfur, depriving people of access to clean water needed for basic hygiene measures such as washing dishes and preparing food. Delivering humanitarian aid has also become nearly impossible, the organization added.
