
The cholera death toll in Sudan’s Darfur region has risen to 374 deaths and nearly 9,000 infections since the outbreak began in June.
According to a report by the General Coordination of Camps for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Refugees in Darfur, the region recorded 319 new cases, including 13 deaths from cholera.
The report indicated that IDP camps and areas still experiencing high infection rates include Tawila in North Darfur, Jebel Marra, Nyala in South Darfur, Zalingei in Central Darfur, and Khazzan Jadeed in East Darfur.
It stated that total infections in Tawila have reached 4,886 cases, with 77 deaths since the outbreak. In Jebel Marra, there have been 152 deaths and hundreds of infections, while South Darfur has reported 97 cases, including two deaths.
In Kalma IDP camp in Nyala, there have been 435 cases, with 64 deaths; Otash camp has reported 222 cases, with 55 deaths; and Dreij camp recorded 130 cases, with four deaths.
Cases have also been reported in Al-Salam camp, while the cumulative total in Khazzan Jadeed in East Darfur has reached 96 cases, including 20 deaths.
The report warned that cholera continues to spread in Hamidiya and Hassa Hissa camps in Zalingei, Central Darfur, where 75 cases have been reported since the outbreak, including two deaths. In Azum, west of Zalingei, there have been 109 cases, also with two deaths.
