Agricultural Production Declines in Darfur and Kordofan Due to Armed Conflict

Mashawir – Reports

CARE International reported that the findings of a recent study revealed a decline in agricultural production for 89% of farmers in Darfur and Kordofan as a result of the ongoing armed conflict.

The study was based on a household survey of 492 smallholder farmers conducted between March 21 and April 15, 2025, in addition to interviews, focus group discussions, and secondary data sources.

The research was carried out in Al-Abbasiya, Abu Jubeiha, and Rashad in South Kordofan State; Abu Karinka, Adila, and Bahr Al-Arab in East Darfur State; as well as Jebel Marra and Kass in South Darfur State.

According to CARE’s findings, 89% of farmers reported a drop in their agricultural productivity due to the conflict, while 57.7% of survey participants cited insecurity as a major factor affecting their ability to harvest crops.

The study also noted that 76.2% of respondents reported post-harvest crop losses, describing this as another severe blow to local production and food security.

Agriculture in areas under the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Darfur and Kordofan is facing a collapse in the production chain—from access to seeds, fertilizers, fuel, and machinery to the ability to reach farmland—due to insecurity.
