UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric condemned the escalation of violence and the killing of innocent civilians in the city of El Fasher, reiterating the rejection of attacks on hospitals, especially as such assaults threaten the provision of medical care — the last lifeline for residents deprived of humanitarian aid.
In his daily press briefing, Dujarric expressed concern over reports of a new deadly attack on a mosque where families sought safety and shelter, resulting in the deaths of more than 10 people. This incident followed another attack on a different mosque last month, which left around 70 people dead. He stressed the need to protect religious sites and worshippers.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) also strongly condemned the Rapid Support Forces’ attacks on neighborhoods in El Fasher, particularly the targeting of the “Saudi Hospital” and a mosque sheltering displaced persons.
