Sudan’s Minister of Interior, Lt. Gen. Babiker Samra Mustafa, has called for urgent international support for the 2.2 million Sudanese returnees who have come back to the country since the beginning of the year, as well as for the reconstruction of infrastructure and basic services destroyed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and the lifting of financial restrictions hindering development efforts.
Speaking at a high-level event held on the sidelines of the 76th session of the Executive Committee of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva, Samra noted that unilateral sanctions and financial restrictions imposed on Sudan’s financial system obstruct recovery and development efforts, depriving the country of access to concessional financing.
He urged the international community and global financial institutions to adopt flexible approaches and innovative partnerships that would enable investment in reconstruction and sustainable development in Sudan.
The majority of returnees from displacement and asylum continue to suffer from a lack of basic services and limited employment opportunities.
