The Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Army, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, discussed today (Wednesday) in the capital, Khartoum, with the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General to Sudan, Pekka Haavisto, international efforts aimed at ending the war in the country, at a time when field developments are escalating in a number of regions.
Haavisto, who is visiting Sudan on his first official mission since his appointment, reiterated the United Nations’ commitment to supporting efforts aimed at reaching a ceasefire and working to find a lasting peaceful solution to the conflict.
He confirmed that his visit represents an important opportunity to listen directly to the visions of the various key political and civil actors in the country.
The UN envoy stressed the importance of adopting the option of dialogue and de-escalation as a fundamental gateway towards a comprehensive cessation of hostilities, in addition to the necessity of prioritizing the protection of civilians and taking confidence-building measures that create the conditions for tangible progress in the political process.
He affirmed that the United Nations remains fully engaged with all relevant parties to promote peace and stability and provide humanitarian assistance across Sudan, stressing the keenness of the UN Security Council and the UN Secretary-General for the unity of Sudan and the integrity of its territories.
