The Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM), led by Abdel Wahid al-Nur, held talks with the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Pekka Haavisto, in Nairobi to discuss the humanitarian situation in Darfur.
The movement’s spokesperson, Mohamed Al-Nayer, said that the movement’s chairman and his accompanying delegation met with the UN envoy to address humanitarian issues and ways to respond to the growing essential needs of displaced people in what they describe as “liberated areas.”
He added that the delegation briefed the UN envoy on the role the movement plays in protecting civilians, displaced persons, and humanitarian workers, especially as the number of displaced people continues to rise amid shortages of basic necessities.
Al-Nayer explained that the delegation also presented the movement’s initiative aimed at stopping and ending the war in Sudan, while addressing the historical roots of the crisis.
He further noted that the delegation invited the UN envoy to visit the “liberated areas” under the movement’s control to assess the humanitarian situation firsthand.
