Hamdok meets UN envoy to discuss options for resolving the Sudan crisis

Former Prime Minister and head of the Civil Democratic Alliance of the Revolution Forces (“Sumoud”), Dr. Abdalla Hamdok, met today (Tuesday) in the German capital, Berlin, with the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General to Sudan, Mr. Pekka Haavisto, at the start of Hamdok’s visit to the city.

At the beginning of the meeting, Hamdok renewed his congratulations to Haavisto on his appointment as the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, expressing confidence in his ability to carry out his duties successfully based on his extensive diplomatic experience.

He also commended the initial steps taken by the UN envoy and his approach of engaging with all parties involved in the Sudanese conflict.

The meeting addressed developments in the ongoing war in Sudan and its catastrophic humanitarian consequences, as well as the risks it poses to the country’s future.

Both sides stressed the importance of intensifying regional and international efforts to reach an immediate end to the war and to work toward achieving sustainable peace that meets the aspirations of the Sudanese people.

Dr. Hamdok affirmed the readiness of the “Sumoud” alliance to cooperate with the UN envoy and support his efforts aimed at achieving peace and stability in Sudan.

For his part, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to Sudan, Mr. Pekka Haavisto, expressed his commitment to intensifying efforts and working with Sudanese stakeholders, as well as regional and international actors, to reach an urgent and lasting peace that puts an end to the suffering of the Sudanese people.
