The Norwegian Nobel Committee has confirmed that 287 candidates have been nominated for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, including Sudanese Emergency Rooms, in a move reflecting the growing global recognition of grassroots humanitarian initiatives.
The committee’s secretary, Kristian Berg Harpviken, stated that the list includes 208 individuals and 79 organizations.
He noted that this year has seen a significant number of new names compared to previous cycles, highlighting the diversity of global efforts in peacebuilding and humanitarian work.
The inclusion of Sudanese Emergency Rooms among the nominees comes in recognition of their vital role amid the ongoing war since 2023. These volunteer networks have been providing urgent assistance to civilians, including food, medicine, and emergency services in affected neighborhoods.
They have emerged as one of the most prominent forms of community organization in Sudan, relying on volunteer efforts while operating in extremely dangerous conditions, amid partial collapse of basic services and complex security challenges.
The circulated list also includes prominent international figures such as Donald Trump, Yulia Navalnaya, and Pope Leo XIV, along with other political and parliamentary personalities, reflecting the wide range of nominees across political, humanitarian, and diplomatic fields.
Harpviken emphasized that the Nobel Peace Prize is gaining increasing importance amid rising global conflicts, noting that peace efforts continue despite mounting pressures on international cooperation.
The winner is scheduled to be announced on October 9, 2026, with the award ceremony set for December 10 in Oslo, drawing widespread global attention.
