Sudanese Journalists Syndicate Documents Killing of 34 Journalists and Condemns Violations

Omdurman – Mashawir

The Sudanese Journalists Syndicate stated in a press release that “34 journalists, including 5 women journalists, have been killed since the outbreak of the war.” It also documented 680 violations, including killings, displacement, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, physical assaults, threats, harassment, confiscation of equipment, and the direct targeting of media institutions.

The syndicate renewed its call for the immediate and unconditional release of all detained journalists, stressing that any process of dialogue or democratic transition in Sudan cannot succeed without guaranteeing media independence.

It firmly rejected attempts to control the media through censorship, intimidation, or propaganda, noting that the militarization of the media not only prolongs the conflict but also deepens divisions and undermines prospects for future reconciliation.

The syndicate called for the provision of immediate legal and field protection for journalists, as well as the establishment of an independent and transparent mechanism to investigate crimes committed against them within a defined timeframe.

It also emphasized the need to end impunity, hold perpetrators accountable, ensure unrestricted access to information, respect the independence of media institutions, and guarantee their ability to operate freely and safely.

Finally, the syndicate urged all parties to immediately cease targeting journalists, release detainees unconditionally, disclose the fate of those forcibly disappeared, and initiate a justice process that ensures accountability and prevents impunity.
