SPLM Calls for International Action to Protect Civilians in El Obeid

Nairobi – Mashawir

The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – Democratic Revolutionary Current (SPLM-DRC) issued an urgent appeal on Tuesday to the international and regional community to take immediate action to protect civilians in El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State.

Mohamed Salih Yassin, the movement’s Human Rights Officer, said in a statement that “the Democratic Revolutionary Current believes that the continued targeting of civilian areas and critical infrastructure in El Obeid constitutes a full-fledged war crime. The worsening humanitarian situation represents a dangerous development that requires urgent action by the international, regional, and Sudanese communities to prevent serious violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law.”

He expressed the movement’s deep concern over the serious deterioration of the security and humanitarian situation in the city and its surroundings, amid continued drone attacks and ongoing fighting between the two parties to the conflict for the second consecutive week. The continued fall of drones over civilian areas has resulted in deaths, the spread of fear and terror, and war crimes affecting thousands of civilians, threatening their lives, safety, and security.

The statement noted that civilian areas and vital infrastructure in the city have come under attack, including two major fuel stations, exacerbating the fuel crisis and disrupting the movement of citizens as well as essential services.
