The sudden appearance of dozens of large crocodiles along the banks of the Nile River in Sudan has sparked widespread fear among residents of several villages and communities located near the river.
Public concern has intensified following a number of fatal attacks in which people lost their lives to the predatory reptiles.
The most recent incident occurred about three weeks ago on Sai Island in northern Sudan, where a large crocodile attacked young farmer Omar Mohammed Abdel Khaliq while he was working near the riverbank.
In full view of residents and friends, the crocodile swiftly dragged the farmer into the water and pulled him beneath the surface. Despite desperate rescue attempts and cries of alarm, no one was able to save him.
Although crocodiles are naturally found in the Nile River, residents say the current situation is unusual, with significantly larger numbers being reported in several areas. The sightings have not been limited to northern Sudan; several crocodiles have also been seen in Al-Kalakla, a suburb south of Khartoum, further heightening public anxiety.
Meanwhile, the Sudanese Wildlife Protection Forces, operating under the Sudanese Police, have warned the public against swimming in rivers during this period. The authorities have urged residents of riverside communities to keep away from the Nile’s banks and follow safety guidelines to reduce risks and protect lives.
