Food and Health Conditions Worsen in Darfur Region

Darfur – Mashaweer

Large parts of Sudan’s Darfur region are facing increasingly complex humanitarian and social challenges amid worsening food and health conditions and the growing threat of famine in several areas. The situation has been aggravated by drought, shortages and soaring prices of food commodities, lack of drinking water and fuel, as well as the spread of epidemics and diseases.

UN reports revealed that deteriorating security conditions have displaced around 6,650 people from the Bir Um Sleiba area, located approximately 30 kilometres north of El Geneina in West Darfur. All of them crossed the border and sought refuge in neighbouring Chad.

For months, intense fighting has continued between the Sudanese army and allied joint forces on one side, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the other, in areas including Kulbus, Bir Daqiq, Bir Sleiba and the outskirts of El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur State. Clashes have also been reported around the border town of Tina in North Darfur State.
