Rainstorms that struck the “Dar Amo” displacement camp in Jebel Marra locality, Central Darfur State, left dozens of people injured and caused extensive damage to health and service facilities, further worsening the humanitarian situation in the camp, which is already suffering from shortages in healthcare and shelter services.
Local sources reported dozens of injuries of varying severity among displaced people, while local health facilities are struggling to accommodate the number of casualties and provide the necessary emergency care.
Mustafa Jar Al-Nabi, a volunteer activist in Central Darfur, told Mashaweer that “the storm caused near-total destruction of treatment and healthcare centers in the camp, leaving patients, the injured, women and children without urgent medical services.”
He added that “the storm also caused the collapse and damage of several mosques that had been used as gathering places and temporary shelters for residents. It also almost completely destroyed the camp’s local market, bringing commercial activities to a halt, disrupting livelihoods, and hindering the movement of limited supplies and humanitarian assistance.”
Meanwhile, the camp administration issued an urgent appeal to local and international humanitarian organizations, United Nations agencies and relevant authorities to intervene immediately by providing shelter and essential assistance, deploying emergency medical teams, and working to rehabilitate the damaged health centers in order to prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian and health situation.
