The General Coordination for Refugees and Displaced Persons in Darfur announced on Wednesday that approximately 3,407 displaced people have arrived in the Tawila area of North Darfur State since the beginning of September, amid a severe deterioration in humanitarian conditions and shortages of food, water, medicine, and shelter.
The coordination’s official spokesperson, Adam Rijal, said in a statement that the latest influx included 121 families, bringing the total number of people who have arrived in Tawila since the beginning of the month to 634 families, comprising around 3,407 people.
Rijal explained that the majority of the newly displaced are women, children, and elderly people.
He noted that some families had been displaced more than three times from several areas in North Darfur, including Tura, Dar El Salam, Dar Sumayat, Alouna, and Kafoud, before eventually reaching Tawila.
He added that the continued influx of displaced people reflects the widening humanitarian crisis in the region amid the consequences of war, drought, shortages of humanitarian assistance, and deteriorating food security.
Rijal warned that conditions could further deteriorate given the limited humanitarian response.
