UNICEF: Acute Malnutrition Spreading Among Children in Southern Khartoum

Khartoum – Mashawir

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has reported the spread of acute malnutrition among children in southern Khartoum.

The organisation said it had distributed packages containing therapeutic food to help children suffering from severe acute malnutrition in the capital.

Meanwhile, activists in Omdurman reported an increase in the number of people seeking meals at community kitchens (takayas) across Khartoum State due to rising commodity prices. They noted that cooking pots at the kitchens were becoming overcrowded as demand increased.

At the same time, attendance at Al-Balila Square has risen, with video footage showing hundreds of people gathering at the site in search of food.

An activist involved in distributing food supplies at the square reported that the number of people seeking assistance had increased from 900 to 1,200 within a few days. The activist expected the number to rise to thousands in the coming period.
