Death of Two Children and a Pregnant Woman in a Fire at a Displaced Persons Camp in Darfur

Jebel Marra - Mishawir

The General Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugee Camps in Darfur reported that a devastating fire at the Rokero displaced persons camp in Jebel Marra, Darfur, resulted in the death of two children and a pregnant woman, while 76 others were injured, including some in critical condition who were transferred to the hospital.

In a statement issued Thursday evening, the spokesperson for the coordination, Adam Rijal, mentioned that the fire destroyed hundreds of shelters, belongings, and food supplies, leaving hundreds of families without shelter or food under harsh humanitarian conditions.

He added that the incident highlights the vulnerability of displaced persons and the lack of safety standards within the camps.

A series of fires have occurred in displaced persons camps in the Darfur region over the past few months, often attributed to the use of flammable building materials, high temperatures, strong winds, and overcrowding within these camps.

The General Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugee Camps in Darfur has appealed to international organizations and humanitarian agencies, especially the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the World Food Program, and Médecins Sans Frontières, to intervene urgently to provide shelter, food, medicine, and water.
