UN: 76% of Women in Sudan Feel Unsafe Amid Rising Violence

Geneva – Mashawir

A representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Sudan, Fabrizia Falcioni, stated that “women and girls across Sudan are recounting ongoing experiences of danger, as gender-based violence has become a part of their daily lives—whether along roads as they try to flee the conflict or upon arriving at displacement camps.”

Falcioni explained that most of the women she met during her field visits to several states—including Khartoum, White Nile, Blue Nile, and the northern states—have lived under shelling and armed conflict for many months.

She noted that many of them have been displaced multiple times, with some experiencing up to four displacements over the three years of war.

She added that women have either experienced or witnessed “immense violence” affecting their families and communities, emphasizing that the journey to safety is far from secure. Along the way, they face harassment and sexual and physical violence, as well as shortages of food and water. Their sense of insecurity often persists even after reaching displacement sites.
