Sudanese “Sumoud” Alliance: Consensus on Berlin Principles Reflects Growing International Attention to Sudan Crisis

Addis Ababa – Mashawir

The Civil Democratic Alliance of the Forces of the Revolution, “Sumoud,” welcomed the Berlin Principles Declaration on Sudan, which was agreed upon by governments as well as international and regional organizations.

The alliance stated that this consensus reflects increasing international attention to the Sudanese crisis and a growing determination to help end the bloody conflict, now in its fourth year, which has resulted in the world’s largest humanitarian catastrophe.

It added that the Berlin Principles are consistent with the calls and aspirations of Sudanese people advocating for an end to the war and seeking peace across the country. The declaration emphasized the need to end the conflict through a peaceful process aligned with the Quartet statement, the African Union roadmap, and relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

The alliance further noted that the signatories stressed key agreed principles, including preserving Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and affirming that there is no military solution to the country’s crisis. They also highlighted the importance of ensuring humanitarian aid reaches those affected, protecting civilians and civilian infrastructure, and investigating all crimes and violations committed during the war, with accountability for perpetrators. Additionally, the declaration underscored the need to halt all forms of external support that fuel the conflict.

The statement also called for launching an independent and transparent Sudanese dialogue led by civilians, aimed at ending the war and achieving a sustainable democratic civilian transition.

The alliance concluded that this broad international consensus represents an important opportunity that requires strengthening Sudanese national will to end what it described as a criminal war that has devastated the country, killed hundreds of thousands of civilians, and displaced millions—urging that it must stop immediately without delay.
