FAO Distributes Seeds to Thousands of Families in Kordofan for the First Time Since the Outbreak of War

Kordofan – Mashawir

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) announced the launch of a seed distribution campaign ahead of the rainy season for 137,000 families in Kordofan, marking the first such initiative since the outbreak of the armed conflict.

The organization revealed that it had purchased 1,330 metric tons of sorghum and millet seeds with support from Italy and the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).

It noted that 20 percent of these supplies have already reached the cities of Abu Jubaiha in South Kordofan State and El Obeid in North Kordofan.

Agriculture in areas controlled by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Kordofan is facing a collapse in the production chain, beginning with shortages of seeds, fertilizers, fuel, and machinery, and extending to the inability to access farmland due to insecurity.

FAO Representative in Sudan, Hongjie Yang, said that seed distribution in Kordofan represents a critical window of opportunity, adding that seeds delivered on time help restore food production, dignity, and resilience.
