Sudan Records the Highest Number of Internally Displaced People for the Third Consecutive Year

Port Sudan – Mashawir

The number of people displaced within their own countries due to conflict and violence increased last year compared to displacement caused by natural disasters, with a record 32 million cases of displacement recorded, particularly in Iran and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Sudan, devastated by civil war, recorded the highest number of internally displaced people for the third consecutive year, with more than 9 million displaced persons. It was followed by Colombia, Syria, Yemen, and Afghanistan.

The Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council, Jan Egeland, said in a statement that “the displacement of tens of millions of people inside their own countries reflects a global failure in efforts to prevent conflicts and protect civilians.”

With new conflicts being added to the many existing crises, violence-related displacement is expected to continue rising.

Egeland added that “countless families are returning to destroyed homes and facing a lack of basic services.”

He also noted that “millions of people have been displaced in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Iran, and Lebanon, further increasing the already record-high levels of displacement.”
