Deadly Epidemics Threaten the Lives of Displaced People in Darfur

North Darfur – Mashawir

The General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees in the Darfur region said that “the spread of diseases and malnutrition represents a major tragedy threatening the lives of displaced people in the camps.”

It noted that “these camps are completely lacking sufficient food, clean water, and basic healthcare services.”

In a statement, the coordination revealed that the Jebel Marra areas recorded more than 200 suspected cases of mpox, the vast majority of them children, in addition to 259 suspected cases of whooping cough and 116 confirmed cases of other infectious diseases.

The statement warned that “thousands of children are suffering from severe wasting and weight loss, while pregnant women face the risk of death during childbirth due to malnutrition and the lack of medical care, alongside the widespread spread of malaria, watery diarrhea, and respiratory infections caused by shortages of medicines and qualified health centers.”
