Measles Ravages Children in Darfur Amid Collapse of Healthcare

North Darfur – Mashawir

aThe Darfur region is witnessing an alarming health situation as diseases and epidemics continue to spread due to the collapse of the healthcare sector and the lack of medicines and medical supplies in hospitals, many of which have been directly targeted and had their infrastructure destroyed.

As a result of these conditions, the deadly measles disease has spread among children across several towns and areas in the region. According to the organization “Doctors Without Borders,” a total of 850 measles cases have been reported, including 310 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition. The disease has also claimed the lives of dozens of children.

In this context, Hamza Hassan, the media officer for the Emergency Room in Tawila and Jebel Marra, said that “children are the most affected.”

He added, “Measles, which could have been prevented with simple vaccines, has today become deadly because vaccination campaigns have been suspended for more than three years.”

He continued, “With widespread malnutrition, children’s immune systems have become almost non-existent.”
