The organization Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières – MSF) announced that it has recorded 80 suspected cases of monkeypox in eastern Jebel Marra in South Darfur State, western Sudan.
The organization stated that it is cooperating with the World Health Organization (WHO) in collecting samples, while laboratory tests are currently being conducted to confirm the infections pending the final results.
Doctors Without Borders also said it is closely monitoring the situation regarding suspected monkeypox cases in primary healthcare centers in the areas of Java and Soni.
Primary healthcare centers in Jebel Marra suffer from severe shortages of medicines and medical equipment needed to respond to disease outbreaks, while all referral and teaching hospitals across Darfur have ceased operations.
