The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs announced that international relief and humanitarian organizations are intensifying their efforts and racing against time to contain and combat the spread of several epidemics and diseases in Sudan.
According to a recent field report by OCHA, the World Health Organization recorded more than 100 cases of acute watery diarrhea suspected to be cholera in the locality of An-Nuhud. Dozens of deaths were also reported within just one week, prompting the WHO to dispatch urgent medical supplies and consumables to the affected area.
At the same time, more than 300 suspected cases of Mpox, along with five deaths, were reported this week in the states of Central and South Darfur, according to the report.
The UN office’s report also indicated that suspected cases of Dengue Fever in the Northern State have tripled within one month, exceeding 500 cases.
The report noted that “the ongoing conflict over the past three years and the exceptional conditions accompanying it have further worsened the health sector’s collapse and hindered the delivery of medicines and essential strategic vaccines to localities and villages across the country.”
