Washington Intensifies Consultations to Advance Efforts to End the War in Sudan

Washington – Mashawir

The Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto, has intensified his regional diplomatic efforts aimed at supporting de-escalation initiatives and strengthening civilian protection, amid a rise in drone attacks across the Darfur region in western Sudan.

According to Farhan Haq, Haavisto recently held a series of meetings in Doha, Abu Dhabi, and Riyadh with officials and stakeholders involved in the Sudan crisis. These discussions were part of ongoing efforts to encourage the parties to reduce tensions and move toward a Sudanese-led political process.

Speaking at a press conference, Haq explained that Haavisto is working through a five-member international mechanism on Sudan that includes the United Nations, the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the Arab League, and the European Union. The group’s objective is to support a political track that could pave the way for an inclusive Sudanese dialogue.

Haq also noted that, over recent months, the committee has conducted consultations with political groups, civil society organizations, and representatives of women, youth, and displaced communities to ensure that a broad range of Sudanese voices participate in shaping the priorities and mechanisms of the anticipated civilian dialogue process.
