United Nations: Khartoum Is a Ghost City Shrouded in Darkness
Bahri – Mashawir
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has described parts of Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, as a “ghost city” filled with burned-out buildings and darkness. Despite these conditions, people are returning because “no one wants to remain indefinitely in displacement camps.”
Andrew Saberton, Deputy Executive Director for Management at UNFPA, said that during his recent visit to Sudan, he witnessed a country striving to return to normal life despite the ongoing war.
Saberton noted that the Fund is contributing to the reconstruction of Al-Dayat Hospital in Khartoum by providing medical personnel and the equipment necessary to restore its services.
The Deputy Executive Director emphasized that the starting point for Sudan’s recovery is the achievement of a sustainable ceasefire and lasting peace.
He added that the reconstruction process will require large-scale investments in healthcare protection services and other essential civilian services.
