Concerns Grow Over Persistent Acute Hunger Affecting 41% of Sudan’s Population

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has expressed concern over the continued expansion of food insecurity and acute hunger in Sudan, warning that approximately 19.5 million people, representing 41 percent of the country’s population, are expected to face acute food insecurity through the beginning of next year.
In a recent report, the IPC noted that around 135,000 people are currently experiencing catastrophic conditions classified under Phase 5, the most severe level of food insecurity.
The report further indicated that more than 5 million people are facing emergency levels of food insecurity, while 14.3 million people are experiencing acute food crises.
The IPC also projected a further deterioration in conditions during the dry season, with the number of people classified in Phase 5 (Catastrophe) expected to rise to nearly 200,000 individuals.
